Reflections on India: Strengthening Ties Between the World’s Largest and Oldest Democracies
Deep Pokhrel | National Security Innovation Project Lead
Reflecting on my recent trip to India, I’m reminded of the massive potential for U.S.-India defense cooperation at this critical moment. Last week, Prime Minister Modi and President Trump reaffirmed the strategic importance of their bilateral relationship, emphasizing economic growth, cutting-edge technologies, and defense collaboration between the world’s oldest and largest democracies. The two leaders highlighted the growing alignment of their strategic interests and committed to expanding their defense partnership across multiple domains. Later this year, the U.S. and India are set to finalize a ten-year "Framework for the U.S.-India Major Defense Partnership," marking a key step forward in strengthening these ties.
This strengthened partnership presents a unique opportunity for innovation, particularly through platforms like the India to America (I2A) Launchpad. FedTech’s I2A Launchpad brings together a cohort of defense and dual-use startups, enabling them to leverage shared values and mutual security interests. The program reinforces the growing potential for collaboration between the U.S. and India in advancing defense technology and innovation, paving the way for even more impactful partnerships in the future.
Lessons from India: Innovation at the Forefront
During our on-site workshops with the I2A Launchpad companies in Mumbai, I witnessed firsthand the innovative technologies being developed by some of India’s most ambitious startups. Space sensing, Unmanned Aerial Systems / Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS/c-UAS), Radio Frequency Detection (RF detection), and Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) companies are not only shaping the future of defense, but also positioning themselves to work with U.S. Department of Defense stakeholders, defense industry primes, and commercial partners.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned through this experience was the immense potential for these companies to integrate into the U.S. defense innovation ecosystem. Meetings with the U.S. Embassy's Office of Defense Cooperation, Indian Ministry of Defense's iDEX-DIO, and industry leaders like Collins Aerospace India reinforced that increasing cooperation between the U.S. and India is not a distant goal—it’s already well underway. This growing collaboration signals a bright future for defense innovation across both nations.
The Road Ahead for the Current I2A Cohort
The Modi-Trump exchanges emphasize the growing momentum behind the INDUS-X initiative to accelerate U.S.-India defense technology cooperation. Our I2A Launchpad startups, Big Bang Boom Solutions, BonV Aero, Optimized Electrotech, KaleidEO, Shyam VNL, Zulu Defence Systems, and Ethereal Exploration Guild, are now better positioned to capitalize fully on this momentous opportunity.
Moving forward, our goal is clear; to connect these firms with the right stakeholders within the U.S. defense establishment. Whether through direct engagement with DoD organizations, defense primes, or venture capital investors, our focus remains on ensuring these firms successfully introduce their best-in-class innovations to the U.S. market.
